What a wonderful sunny week! We’ve had yet another great week of learning as well as some extra special events. The most notable was of course… SPORTS DAY!!! Thank you so much to everyone that was able to come and support. Some pictures of the brilliant teams competing are shared here – congratulations to the winners, and to everyone that tried their very best.
This week’s English saw us beginning to write persuasively about the question “Why are bees so important?”. We began the week learning all about taking notes and then deciding what information was most relevant to the topic. We then consolidated this by responding to a newspaper contributor who thought bees were not at all important – hopefully we’ve persuaded him otherwise.
In maths, we began the week by comparing different units of measurement and then progressed to calculating perimeter. To explore this in depth, we designed our own UCPS zoo, calculating the perimeter each enclosure would need to house the differently-sized animals. You can have another go here.
In guided reading, we continued Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot, a really high-quality and exciting text that is well worth a read at home if you’re looking for something high octane, interesting and easy to pick up and put down (it has lots of very short, snappy chapters). We discussed the book’s characters and vocabulary and even had a very in-depth discussion about whether robots experience emotions… You can have a look here.
In topic, we continued to learn all about Eddington, focussing on the famous names of the different roads and streets and documenting who they were named after and why. In PE, we continued to practise our rounders skills. We’re becoming increasingly skilled at batting and bowling, though fielding and teamwork could still do with some polishing! In science, we expanded on our learning from the trip to the pond in Eddington by going to the forest and collecting insects in special-use jars. We brought them back to the classroom and had a look at the photography of Levon Bliss and what it tells us. Don’t worry, we set our insects free afterwards!
On Thursday, we were treated to a sneak peak of the year 5/6 show We Will Rock You. It’s shaping up to be unmissable, so hope to see you there at the full performance!
Next Week:
In English, we will continue to develop our persuasive writing skills, using power of 3, rhetorical questions, commas in a list and emotive language.
In maths, we circle back to multiplication to get ready for year 4. We’ll be looking in-depth at the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables once more – any practice on Times Tables Rockstars you can get in at home will certainly help!
